FAQ
What is counselling?
Counselling is a ‘talking therapy’. It is an opportunity for you to explore troubles, hurts or other issues with a trained professional in a safe and secure environment.
The counsellor is trained to listen with empathy, seeing the world as though in your shoes. Counsellors do not usually give advice but instead help you find your own solutions.
What is EFT?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a technique that can be used to reduce the charge on the emotions that you are feeling. It is a great way of lowering the intensity of emotions such as anxiety, cravings, anger, hurt and to help those memories that cause you stress or to cringe.
EFT has been described as being like acupuncture for emotions where instead of needles, parts of the face and upper body are tapped by your fingers. You tap on yourself and the therapist will tap on them-self at the same time to show you what to do.
After teaching you a basic EFT recipe, we encourage you to do some EFT at home between sessions and even on an ongoing basis. That way you can maximise its effects.
I have autism or ADHD. Is Newcastle Counselling the right place for me?
I am familiar with the challenges and strengths that autistic people and people with ADHD may face in a neurotypical world. I recognise that each person is an individual and I tailor sessions for you. For example, movement breaks can be incorporated into sessions and lights dimmed/blinds pulled to make appointments more comfortable. I, myself, often wear precision tinted glasses to help reduce my sensitivity to light and improve my visual stress.
Can I have an evening appointment?
Yes, evening appointments are available.
Will you work with my issue?
I work with a range of issues including stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and difficult relationships.
There are difficulties that I do not do my best work with and would be happy to signpost you on if that is the case.
I am happy to have a chat to find out what might be the best approach for you.
Are sessions confidential?
Anything talked about between you and your counsellor is confidential except in a few circumstances where it would need to be broken. These will be explained to you in person and include situations where you reveal yourself at risk of harming yourself, where others or children are at risk of harm, serious crime or when the court makes an order.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your situation. However, as a rough guide, many people find six to eight sessions just right. Others benefit from fewer or more and I can offer ongoing support where that is beneficial.
